Barnaby B. Barratt is an internationally eminent psychoanalyst, specialist in human sexuality, somatic psychologist and bodyworker, a lifelong human rights activist, as well as a practitioner of tantric meditation. Raised in England, he graduated the University of Sussex in the UK with First Class Honors in the School of African and Asian studies, majoring in Social Psychology. He was then awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University, where he earned his Master’s degree in Psychology and Social Relations and his first PhD in Personality and Developmental Psychology. Subsequently, Dr. Barratt trained in clinical psychology at the University of Michigan’s Neuropsychiatric Institute and in adult psychoanalysis at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. He later trained in a variety of modes of bodywork and somatic psychotherapy. He also earned a second PhD (which was transmuted into a “DHS”) in Clinical and Educational Sexology at the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality.
Dr. Barratt has taught and held professorial appointments at a wide range of mainstream and alternative institutions, including Harvard University, the University of Michigan, Pacifica Graduate Institute, Prescott College, Sofia University, the University of Cape Town, and the University of Witwatersrand. He is the author of twelve books and almost a hundred scientific and professional articles and reviews. He was elected a Fellow of the American Psychological Association’s Division of Philosophical Psychology and a Fellow of the American Academy for Psychoanalysis in Psychology. Additionally Dr. Barratt is currently a Senior Research Associate with the WITS Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of Witwatersrand, and a Training Analyst with the South African Psychoanalytic Association (affiliated with the International Psychoanalytic Association). He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology; an Active Clinical Member of the International Psychoanalytic Association; a Clinical Member of European Association for Body Psychotherapy, as well as the United States Association for Body Psychotherapy; and a Clinical Member of the International Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies.
Barnaby B. Barratt is a lifelong advocate of civil liberties and human rights, particularly in relation to sexual minorities. He has supported the work of Amnesty International since his adolescence, but has also been personally active in working on issues of sexual health and the rights of LGBTQI populations. He was previously Founder and President of the Midwest Institute of Sexology and a Director of the Woodhull Freedom Alliance, serving briefly as its Chair. Formally, he was a Trustee for Positive Vibes, which supports HIV+ and LGBTQI organizations throughout southern Africa. Dr. Barratt is a longstanding practitioner of tantric meditation. He has lived and travelled extensively in England, India, the USA, China and Thailand. He currently resides in Johannesburg, South Africa, but maintains family relations and professional connections throughout the United States and Europe.
